Careers and Personal Development

The Police Rehabilitation and Retaining Trust has been awarded a major quality award for its excellence in offering information, advice and guidance to former police officers seeking civilian employment. One of only six Northern Ireland organisations, PRRT was awarded the Matrix Quality Standard by the Department for Employment and Learning.

A comprehensive Career and Personal Development Service is provided at Maryfield and other locations in Northern Ireland to eligible clients.

One-to-one sessions with a Careers Adviser are designed to help identify personal skills, abilities and aptitudes. Information, advice and guidance are provided to help make decisions about options including planning a new career, choosing a job, education and training opportunities and pursuing an active retirement.

Career Development

A Careers Adviser will focus on determining job or career goals through a number of one to one sessions. This involves reflecting on the experience and expertise gained in a police career, previous employment experience and other activities including hobbies, interests and other responsibilities. A personal skills assessment is completed to break down the number of skills used to perform a range of police duties. This provides an opportunity to create confidence and recognition of individual personal abilities and the relevance of the identified skills to other jobs and careers. Assistance is also available with Job Search and the development and completion of CV’s and application forms.

Active Retirement

Paid employment, another career or retraining for work may not be the right focus or option for personal or health related reasons. Should this be the case, a Careers Adviser is available to discuss other options including learning new skills, unpaid work, volunteering, training and education opportunities. A Careers Adviser is available for a number of one to one sessions to help determine opportunities and goals based on personal interests, experience and expertise.

Information Resource Centre

A range of information to support any advice and guidance in relation to decision making is provided through an Information Resource Centre which may be accessed in person, by telephone or e-mail. This enables informed decisions to be made based on readily available up to date information about careers, jobs and training and education courses.
