LOCAL TOURISM PREDICTED TO BE A £1M A DAY INDUSTRY

Last year alone, 2 million people visited Northern Ireland generating more than £400 million in revenue for the local economy.

At present, some 20,000 people are employed directly within the sector.  This figure rises to over 50,000 when the closely related hospitality and leisure sectors are factored in.

With the growth in visitor numbers projected to generate £1 million a day and 13,000 new jobs by 2012 for the local economy, it’s easy to see why the tourism is Northern Ireland’s fastest growing industry.

People 1st is the UK wide Sector Skills Council for the hospitality, leisure, travel & tourism industry.  Their role is to help the industry attract, develop and retain the people it needs to meet both current demand and predicted future growth.

Ex-officers possess many of the people centred skills required at all levels by employers in the sector.  With this in mind, PRRT will be hosting an information session on the types of vacancies that exist within the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industries within Northern Ireland.

Sandra Herdman, Head of Careers Guidance and Personal Development, PRRT said: “This is the first of what we hope will be a series of sector focused information sessions for PRRT clients interested in learning more about available opportunities within a range of industries as well as the opportunities that might be available in the future.

“We are committed to ensuring that the advice, guidance and training meets the current needs of both clients and employers.  Information sessions such as these are an important part of that process.”

PRRT hopes to facilitate an information session from industry representatives to discuss employment opportunities with clients should sufficient interest be expressed.  If you are interested in attending a half day session, which will be held at Maryfield in early April, please contact the Information Officer by Thursday, 23rd March at the latest on Tel: 028 9042 7788 or email: admin@prrt.org
