KEEP MOVING: NEW ARTHRITIS CLASS PLANNED FOR JANUARY

The physiotherapy service at PRRT is planning to start an arthritis class in January 2007.  Nearly one fifth of the UK population (9 million people) visit their GP every year with arthritis and related conditions.  Osteoarthritis is on the increase in the UK due to obesity and longer life expectancy-both major contributing factors.

Research has shown the importance of keeping arthritic joints supple by staying as mobile and as active as possible because it will reduce pain and can have psychological benefits by improving peoples’ self confidence and esteem.

Many people, particularly older people, are afraid to exercise because they believe, mistakenly, that it will cause further damage to their joints.  However, joints are designed to move and inactivity is harmful to the tissues in and around the joint.

The arthritis class will include stretching, strengthening and mobility exercises.  Sessions will also provide information on different types of arthritis, the importance of exercise and general fitness, diet and lifestyle changes.

The class will run once a week for 8 weeks.

Those people who already have some form of arthritis can only benefit from taking up exercise.  If you don’t use it, you may lose it!  So keep your joints moving and your muscles strong.

If you feel that your mobility has decreased over the past few years due to aches and pains, or you are unsure of an appropriate type of exercise, this may be the class for you.

Remember, it is never too late to start keeping yourself fit!
