DIPLOMA IN SOCIAL SCIENCES - GRADUATION DAY
The second graduation ceremony for the Diploma in Social Sciences course took place in September at Cultra Manor.
The course, which had a 100% pass rate, began in September 2004. Each of the 24 students studied on a part-time basis attending PRRT one day and one evening per week over a period of nine months. By June 2005, the students had completed modules in: Sociology, Maths, Psychology, Communication Skills, Citizen and the Law, Research and Study Skills, Personal and Professional Development and Management Theory. All 24 also successfully completed Microsoft Word, internet and email IT examinations.
Ted Cooke, Course Director, PRRT said: “The past nine months have been both challenging and enjoyable. The fact that all of the students who started the course together have finished the course together is a reflection of their level of enthusiasm and commitment.”
The students, their families and friends were addressed at the ceremony by, among others, Professor Anne Moran, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ulster (UU). Professor Moran also presented the diplomas to the students as the qualification is accredited by the UU. It was a proud moment for Chloe Duncan as she stepped forward to receive a diploma on behalf of her dad who had been detained in hospital following a motorcycle accident.
The Endeavour Award, which is awarded to the student who demonstrated exceptional effort and commitment throughout the year, was won by Mervyn Sharpe. The winner is nominated by his or her fellow students.
“Mervyn demonstrated the spirit of the course by overcoming many problems while still maintaining his sense of fun” said Ted Cooke, Course Director.
While the ceremony marked the end of a period of study as far as the Diploma is concerned, it also marked the start of a new educational journey for many of the students. Three have gone on to university to study at degree level and seven others have returned to PRRT to undertake other academic courses.
A further 14 students started their Diploma course in September this year, and successful candidates are due to graduate in late summer 2006.
