ENVIRONMENT & CONSERVATION INFORMATION SESSION - REGISTRATION CLOSES 3 NOVEMBER
A recent survey by Lantra, the sector skills council for land based activities, has revealed that conservation organisations are facing recruitment problems.
A survey found that employers needed staff with “skills in areas such as communications, IT, project management, budgeting and staff supervision”- skills which ex –police officers have in abundance.
Of course practical skills are also required, for example chainsaw skills, ATV driving, pesticide application.
Derek McKinstry, Course Director at C.A.F.R.E., Greenmount Campus describes qualifications in Environmental Conservation as “equipping any student for employment in many different conservation and wildlife management roles in Northern Ireland”.
Other opportunities in environmental work focus on use of the countryside, waste management and maintaining the quality of soil, air and waterways. Local councils in Northern Ireland employ waste management officers, public sector organisations such as the Water Service employ Quality Testers for work on waterways; again qualifications such as Countryside Management at Greenmount are useful in gaining employment.
PRRT is to hold an Information Session about careers, jobs and relevant qualifications within countryside management, waste management and conservation on the 6th November 2006. To attend the Information Day please register your interest by Friday, 3 November by contacting Kathryn on 028 9039 3573 or email armaghrc@prrt.org.
Should you wish to find out more about this sector please telephone the Information Officer on 028 9042 7788. You can also visit one of our regional Information centres in Maydown, Antrim, Armagh or Enniskillen to explore the opportunities in this sector.
