Target Client
Any former or serving officer (who intends to leave within the next three years) regular or reserve or any medically retired officers with little or no formal educational qualifications, who feel they may have underachieved academically or who may feel they never had the opportunity for academic progression, is invited to apply for this course

Course Objectives
This course is designed to be a short intensive course of study which will be intellectually challenging and which will require a commitment from the participant which will be demanding but rewarding. The course will lead to the award of a Diploma in Social Sciences which will be a stand-alone qualification or which can be used as an Access diploma for entrance to university and thus open the door to higher third level education.

Course Content
The course consists of seven modules all of which must be successfully completed for the award

Modules
  • Personal and Professional Development (incorporating Research and Study Skills and IT)
  • Mathematics (10 week Basic Maths Module followed by 26 week Maths module)
  • Law and the Citizen
  • Introduction to Management Theory
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Communication Skills
Successful completion of the mathematics and communication modules will give the students GCSE equivilence in these subjects. The IT element of the personal and professional development will result in the award of a Microsoft Word Certificate

Course Assessment
The seven modules will be assessed by way of examination, assignments, case studies and portfolios of evidence. Coursework will also form part of the assessment process. Knowledge and skills will continuously develop throughout the course.

Graduation Ceremony
A graduation ceremony will be held in August

Further Development
Successful completion of this course will give the applicant the opportunity to expand their educational horizons with the opportunity, if taken, to progress to university, to move to another career or just to achieve the personal satisfaction of achieving a lifetime desire to have a diploma.
