French Polishing
Part-time - 1 day per week for 14 weeks (84 hours)


Course Objective


This course is intended to enable learners to become familiar with the basic operations and techniques employed in furniture repair and restoration. Learners should become reasonably competent in carrying out all the activities necessary to successfully conduct furniture repair and restoration. The course is not examinable.

Course Content

- Materials and tools - storage of consumables and materials; selecting tools, proper use of tools, care of tools; health and safety; tools - cross out, tenon and dovetail saws, paring and mortice chisels, spokeshaves, carpenters brace and rulers, combination and rebate planes, marking gauges and tri-squares, sharpening stones, mallet, hammer, drills etc; materials - striping and cleaning agents, stains and colourings, polishes;
- Activities - identifying and selecting timber, using hand tools, cutting, constructing basic joints, striping and cleaning, sanding, staining and colouring, polishing; French polishing sample boards and carrying out selected projects on items of furniture.

After attending the course participants will:

- Understand required materials and equipment.
- Practice new skills to develop expertise.
- Carry out basic operations and techniques employed in furniture repair and restoration.
